Survodutide (BI 456906) is a synthetic dual agonist of the glucagon receptor and the GLP-1 receptor, developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and Zealand Pharma and conceptually based on the gut hormone oxyntomodulin. In the research literature it is studied for obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). It is an investigational research compound, not an approved medicine: it has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality, and the version sold to laboratories is a research chemical.
Regulatory status: Not an FDA-approved drug. As of 2026 survodutide is investigational and in Phase III trials for obesity and MASH. The FDA granted it Breakthrough Therapy designation for MASH-associated fibrosis in 2024, but a designation is not an approval and it remains not approved for human use.
